EC Drops Antitrust Case Against Qualcomm

The European Commission today announced that it has decided to close formal antitrust proceedings against San Diego-based Qualcomm, saying in a statement that "it does not consider it appropriate" to invest further resources into the case. The EC had opened up an investigation in October of 2007 to investigate alleged abuse by Qualcomm of its dominant market position. The EC had been spurred by Broadcom, Ericcson, NEC Corp., Nokia Corp., Panasonic, and Texas Instruments, who complained that Qualcomm was charging excessive royalty licenses for use of its patents.
