Wemo Links with Apple Homekit

Smart home accessory manufacturer and Belkin International Inc. subsidiary Wemo reported July 19 that its “mini smart plug” product is now compatible with Apple Inc.’s HomeKit app. This link will allow Apple’s Siri feature to control the plugs and devices that are connected to them as well as schedule activation or shutdown of appliances or lights. Socaltech reports this is WeMo’s first collaboration with Apple Home, but that it plans to make more HomeKit compatible products later in 2018.

Esko-Graphics Buys Blue Software

Packaging design software company Esko-Graphics Inc., a subsidiary of the Danaher Corp. has bought Blue Software, an artwork management software firm, from Westwood-based Diversis Capital. The Business Journal reports terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but that Esko-Graphics will now have access to the software to expedite its work in the consumer packaged goods market. Diversis Capital acquired Blue Software in 2014.

Bird Accepts Low-Income Riders

After raising nearly $400 million in funding, scooter company Bird Rides Inc. is now kicking some of that cash back to consumers. Typically, the company requires a $1 base fee on top of 15 cents per minute ridden, but consumers enrolled in Medicaid, CalFresh or SNAP programs or with proof of discounted utility bills can ride without the base fare. TechCrunch reports this comes after Bird’s competitor, Lime launched a similar program in May 2018.
