Facebook, Viasat Team On Internet Connectivity Effort In Rural Mexico

Carlsbad-based satellite Internet and communications provider Viasat and social networking giant Facebook announced this morning that the two will provide high speed Internet to communities in rural Mexico who lack reliable internet or have no connectivity at all. According to the two, the deal will offer up Viasat's "Community Wi Fi" hotspot service to communities in an effort being backed by Facebook. The two said Facebook is investing in the roll-out and working with Viasat to help identify optimal deployment locations within Viasat's current and planned satellite coverage. The deal initiall focuses on Mexico, but the two also said they will be looking at other opportunities to expand the effort globally. Financial details of the deal were not announced.
