Qualcomm Ties With Niantic, Maker of Pokemon Go, For AR Efforts

San Diego-based Qualcomm has launched a new chip for the augmented reality / virtual reality market, saying this week at the Snapdragon Tech Summit that it has also linked with Pokemon Go creator Niantic, as part of an effort to in the augmented reality market. According to Qualcomm, it has created a reference design, including hardware, software, and cloud software which are aimed at enabling augmented reality glasses, which it says is aimed at accelerating the "development of tomorrow's devices". The new Snapdragon XR2 platform allows for 8K, 360-degree video playback, and run Niantic's augmented reality technology, its Real World Platform. Niantic's platform is the technology used in Pokemon Go, as well as Ingress and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. Financial details of the link between Qualcomm and Niantic were not announced.
