Google's AdSense, Developed In LA, Earned More than $7 Billion Last Year

One of Southern California's most successful--and unheralded--inventions for the Internet world earned online publishers more than $7 billion alone last year, Google said this morning. Google announced today that Google Adsense--which it acquired when it bought Santa Monica-based Applied Semantics back in 2003--just turned 10 years old, and now has more than 2 million publishers. Google said that last year, alone, publishers earned more than $7 billion from AdSense ads. AdSense was developed by Applied Semantics, and used software to determine the content and subject of a web page, and then matched those ads to a pool of advertisers; the software was known as Applied Semantics AdSense until Google acquired Applied Semantics on April 24, 2003. Google relaunched AdSense under its own name on June 18th, 2003. Google is running a 10 year celebration of the anniversary of AdSense, which, arguably, represented the turning point for Google from a search engine project to a revenue generating, online advertising powerhouse.
