Getaround Expands Car Sharing Service To LA

Getaround, the developer of a peer-to-peer car sharing service, said it has officially launched in the greater Los Angeles area. Getaround said that car owners in LA can make their automobiles available to others. The San Francisco company's service works through something called Getaround Connect, technology which allows renters to locate and unlock a car using an iOS or Android smartphone app. As part of the expansion to Los Angeles, Getaround has opened up an office in Culver City, where it says it already has hired over a dozen full time and part time employees for the company. The company had a soft launch in LA in March to onboard the first 50 car owners onto its platform. Getaround is venture backed by Braemer Energy Ventures, Toyota Motor Corporation (via SPARX Group), SAIC Capital, the venture capital investment arm of Shanghai Automotive, plus Menlo Ventures and Traingle Peak Partners.
