USC, Caltech License Technology To SFC Energy

The University of Southern California, the California Insitute of Technology, and fuel cell development firm SFC Energy said late Tuesday that the three have executed on a license to a portfolio of U.S. patents for direct methanol fuel cell technology. Financial details of the licensing deal were not disclosed. SFC Energy said it will gain a nonexclusive license to the universities' various methanol fuel cell patents. SFC said the technology is being targeted at use in portable consumer electronics and vehicle power. The three said the technology was developed at the USC Loker Hydrocarbon Research Institute, led by G. K. Surya Prakash and George Olah. The Caltech team included S. Surampudi, S. R. Narayanan, E. Vamos, H. Frank, and G. Halpert.
