According to Pasadena-based green marketplace firm OnGreen , the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), UC Los Angeles (UCLA), and University of Southern California (USC) scored a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to help foster student entrepreneurs via a business plan competition run by the group called First Look West.

A new competition--part of the Startup America effort launched by the Obama Administration, and spearheaded locally by Caltech, USC, and UCLA--said today that it is looking to award $200,000 in prize money to university students with clean energy business ideas. LA Cleantech Incubator , officially launched last week, and was created by Los Angeles Cleantech Alliance, a group supported by Mayor's Office, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Community Redevelopment Agency for Los Angeles, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, UCLA, USC, CalTech, and Arts Center College of Design.

The most attractive thing about it was the educational value. So, we were pretty excited to educate ourselves at TechStars. The program itself is incredibly daunting initially, but it was really valuable for us, especially as an educational experience. We have some great mentors now.

Caltech is a bit easier, but there are quite a number of touchpoints overall who we've had to keep in contact with, remind them who we are, and that we're waiting to hear from them about potential projects. It became a theme in my keynote at Caltech on the future of social networking. Seth’s interest in helping others grew out of his lack of having a mentor. Although both parents are educators, his father a professor and his mother the Commissioner of Education in Connecticut, they did not teach him business.
