The pair posed as UCLA students doing research, Danna said, going from salon to salon asking questions about what worked and what did not with scheduling in their workplaces.

A number of teams have recently been looking to turn that vision into reality, as a result of the Qualcomm Tricorder Prize , a $10M competition being run by the X Prize Foundation to create a real life Tricorder. That''s essentially how the Tricoder competition was formed--it''s time for this to happen. So, it was not a good situation.

We''ve worked out he bugs, and since then have hired a full time CTO and others. We also have a couple of grad school interns from LMU, UCLA, and elsewhere. We''re talking about an industry which is very competitive, first, and two, one that people overwhelmingly try to avoid.

The firm was bootstrapped several years ago, and is profitable, and its founders are both MBAs from UCLA Anderson, where they met. Ramit Varma: Jake (Neuberg), my business partner, met at UCLA's Anderson business school. We also have a director of curriculum and CTO, which as enlarged the user experience on the technical team.
