XPRIZE Awards $15M In Global Learning Competition

Marina Del Rey-based XPRIZE, the organization led by Dr. Peter H. Diamandis which seeks to spur innovative solutions to the world's problems, has awarded $15M in the Global Learning XPRIZE, the prize which challenged innovators to create a way to enable children to teach themselves basic reading, writing and arithmetic within 15 months. According to XPRIZE, it decided to split the top $10M award in the competition between two winners--Kitkit School, which has developed a learning program using a "game-based core"; and onebillion, a developer of "numeracy content" and literacy material. XPRIZE had given five, finalists $1M each to test their education technology solutions in Swahili, testing their programs on nearly 3,000 children across 170 villages in Tanzania; all five of those software products were released into open source, and are available in English and Swahili on Github.
