UC San Diego Teams With Cummins On EV Battery Reuse

The University of California San Diego and engine and powertrain developer Cummins are in an effort to develop ways to reuse and repurpose electric vehicle batteries, Cummins said this morning. According to Cummins, the multi-year partnership with UC San Diego and its battery validation lab, will analyze viable business and technical approaches to effectively reuse and repurpose electric vehicle batteries. Financial details of the partnership were not announced. Cummins is a very large, well known manufacturer of diesel and natural gas engines, as well as hybrid and electric engine technology, plus related products such as battery systems, fuel systems, controls, air handling, filtration, emission solutions and electrical power generation systems. Cummins said that UC San Diego will perform accelerated testing and real-world application testing, and will develop an outdoor second-life demonstration system comprised of Cummins battery modules. Cummins is aiming those "second-life" battery applications at such areas as grid energy storage applications.
