There is much discussion about this weekend’s article in the NY Times regarding Amazon’s work practices. People seem polarized between, “that’s what it takes to succeed” to “I can’t believe what a heartless, intolerant and misogynistic company culture they’ve built.” I’ve heard the gamut from reading opinions online and even hearing the debate in circles of my close friends and family.

A non-profit, environmental group, As You Sow , says that Los Angeles-based food replacement startup Soylent contains high levels of lead and cadmium--and said it plans to file legal action against the company. As You Sow said it has tested samples of Soylent, saying that an independent laboratory found that one serving of Soylent 1.5 can expose a consumer to a concentration of lead that is 12 to 25 times above California's Safe Harbor level for reproductive health, and a concentration of cadmiu

Most entrepreneurs assume that a lack of an online reputation is a good thing. In reality, it’s negative, because people who can’t find you or any mention of your startup anywhere on the Internet assume you are not savvy or have something to hide. At the very least, with no positives for balance, it’s very risky, since the first negative mention of you or your company will kill your reputation.

Irvine-based healthcare information systems developer Quality Systems, Inc. said this morning that its Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Steve Puckett, has resigned from the company, by "mutual agreement" with the company. According to Quality Systems, the move comes due to an effort by new President and CEO Rusty Frantz to take a "detailed, fresh look at our technology initiatives".

Innovate Pasadena , the non-profit which is helping to promote the technology industry in Pasadena, said Monday that it has hired on its first, full-time hire. The group said it has named Celina Guerrero as Director of Marketing and Operations. Innovate Pasadena said that Guerrero has more than 20 years of experience in sales, marketing, and event production, and is a Pasadena native.

San Diego-based Airbitz , a developer of Bitcoin-based mobile wallet software, has raised $450,000 in a funding round, part of an ongoing $1.25M round for the company, the company announced recently. The funding came from Block26, a new, Los Angeles-based venture capital investor focused on digital currency. Block26 is led by Ni'coel Stark and Pedram Hasid, and says it is focused specifically on investing in Bitcoin startups.

Irvine-based telematics developer Spireon announced this morning that it has reached 2.4 million subscribers for its products, which it says makes it the industry's largest non-OEM telematics company. The company offers up GPS tracking software, which is used by insurers to track the driving behavior of their clients. Spireon said its NSpire platform is being used by auto insurers to use rich data to deliver price discounts and more based on driver behavior.
