Western Digital, IBM In Patent Deal

Irvine-based storage giant Western Digital and IBM said this morning that the two companies are in a patent acquisition and licensing deal, where WD will acquire more than 100 patent assets from IBM, and where the two will cross-license a number of patents. Financial details of the deal were not announced. According to the two, WD has acquired patents in the areas of distributed storage, object storage, and emerging non-volatile memory.

SpaceX Conducts Capsule Landing Tests

NASA said late last week that Hawthorne-based space rocket firm SpaceX has tested its ability to land its astronaut landing pod, the SuperDraco, by firing landing engines. NASA said the tethered testing--conducted in McGregor, Texas--is aimed at bringing astronauts back to space with as much accuracy as landing a helicopter. NASA said that the testing is aimed at helping engineers refine landing software and systems on the spacecraft.

According to IDrive, its new VMware Backup produt is aimed at securing virtualized environments, supporting VMware ESXi 5.5 and 6.0 and Vcenter.
