Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center Taken Offline By Ransomware

Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center , a medical center in the Los Angeles area, has been unable to use their computers for more than a week , due to "ransomware" placed on those computers by hackers. According to reports, those hackers have demanded $3.6 million in ransom to allow the hospital to access its data. The hospital has apparently reverted to using paper, fax mahcines, and telephones, and has had to divert patients away from its emergency room.

Semtech Rolls Out 14Gbps Optical Networking Chipset

Camarillo-based analog and mixed signal semiconductor developer Semtech said today that it has rolled out a new set of chipsets for up to 14.5Gbps optical communications. The company said its new GN1090 and GN1190 chipsets are used for quad channel SR optical interconnects operating from 1Gbps up to 14.5Gbps. The CMOS chips are aimed at developers of high speed, optical networking hardware.

American Airlines Seeks To Switch To ViaSat For High Speed Internet

American Airlines is looking to switch its in-flight, wireless Internet services to Carlsbad-based satellite operator ViaSat , according to a lawsuit filed in Texas. American Airlines sued its current wireless Internet service provider, Gogo , seeking to terminate its agreement with that company, saying that ViaSat offers an in-flight connectivity system which "materially improves" on Gogo's service.
