Content Firm Draws Suitors

Two years after Maker Studios co-founder Danny Zappin was ousted as head of the online video firm, a group of former and current executives at his new venture, Zealot Networks, is trying to acquire the branded content company and replace him as chief executive. Zealot co-founder Robert Vanech, the firm’s former chairman and chief financial officer, said he had approached Zappin about the deal and was seeking the backing of private investors and a publicly traded media company to back the bid.

Encinitas-based CycloPure , which is developing technology to purify water of micropollutants, has named Qualcomm co-founder Harvey White to its board of directors. White also was Chairman and CEO of Leap Wireless, the parent company of Cricket Wireless. White also is founder of (SHW)2 Enterprises, and serves on the boards of ViaSat and the Brain Corporation.

Automotive electronics manufacturer HARMAN , which has major operations in Southern California, has been acquired by Samsung Electronics for approximately $8.0 billion, the two announced this morning. The two said Samsung will pay $112.00 per share in cash for publicly traded Harman. Samsung said the acquisition will help boost its presence in the infotainment, telematics, and sound management areas.

Company Recasts Killer Drone As Humanitarian Helper

San Diego-based General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI), the manufacturer of the deadly Predator military drones, says it has retooled one of its aircraft to distribute and deliver emergency humanitarian food and medical supplies to remote areas. According to General Atomics, it has created a new aircraft called "Angel One", which it says had delivering 8,500 pounds of Humanitarian Daily Ration packets (HDRs) for 3,400 people each day.

Qualcomm Shows Off 5G NR Spectrum Sharing System Prototype

San Diego-based Qualcomm said that its subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, has launched a new 5G spectrum sharing system prototype, which demonstrates the use of multiple 5G spectrum for mobile broadband networks. The company said its new 5G New Radio (NR) spectrum sharing prototype uses everything from lower band, sub-6GHz to millimeter wave range high bands, across licensed, unlicensed, and shared spectrum, and is aimed at helping to drive and track the 3GPP standardization of 5G NR.

Vubiq Networks Deploys In Seattle

Irvine-based Vubiq Networks , which develops ultra high speed networking equipment which uses unlicensed, 60 GHz spectrum, said it has deployed its products in Seattle, Washington, in a deal with Atlas Networks. The two said they now are providing fast Internet service to over 200 buildings in Seattle. The two did not discuss how much equipment was required in the install, or any financial term of the deal.
