Mattel Links With Apple On Connected Hot Wheels Toy

El Segundo-based toy maker Mattel has linked with Apple to launch a new, "connected" toy around its Hot Wheels cars, the company said Friday. According to Mattel, its new Hot Wheel Race Portal is a digital accessory which connects into existing Hot Wheels tracks, and allows users to track their vehicles, track speeds and lap counts, and interact with their information via a companion app. Mattel said the new system is exclusively available on Apple.com, at select Apple Stores, and on the Apple App Store. The new system works only with Hot Wheels id premium die-cast vehicles, which have built-in wireless capabilities to store data on each vehicle and provide a unique identification to each vehicle; the new app works with those vehicles to track distance traveled by a vehicle, speeds, and lap counts on those tracks. The new, connected Hot Wheels id Smart Track Kit costs $179.99; each wireless-enabled Hot Wheels id vehicle costs $6.99.
