MeWe raises $4.5 million; Pluto TV launches Spanish programming; Sony adapting video game for television

Social Network MeWe Finds $4.5 Million

Culver City-based social networking startup Sgrouples Inc., operating as MeWe, announced it raised $4.5 million to scale up its operations, bringing total funding to $15 million since launching MeWe in 2012. A MeWe spokesman said the funds will be used to expand the company’s engineering and marketing teams, “keeping pace with the company’s rapid growth.”

Pluto TV Latino Goes Live

Carthay-based Pluto TV, a Viacom Inc. subsidiary, launched its free Spanish-language offerings today, Variety reports. Pluto TV now offers 11 channels in Spanish as well as Portuguese. This is the first non-English push into programming by Pluto, which launched in 2013.

Sony, Square Enix plan “Final Fantasy” series

Sony Pictures Television plans to adapt the “Final Fantasy” video game franchise for television. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Culver City-based SPT is working with El Segundo-headquartered Square Enix, developer of the “Final Fantasy” game, on a live-action TV series.
