Four Southern California firms are headed to Palm Springs for the DEMO launch conference next week, according to a list of the presenters released Friday. This question came up last week. I am hearing from my project management team a bit of distrust in the technical capacity of our web development team. I think we suffer because of the distance and culture but the project management team takes every late delivery or small bug as evidence that the development team may not be capable. There is no cost but you must physically be based in or move to Los Angeles for the 6 months of the program. Jeff Monday watch "mind the information gap" on vimeo. In reading "Driven" and "Made to Stick" I stumbled across an incredibly interesting idea. It's called Information Gap Theory. Dr. George Lowenstien wrote a paper about it in 1994 and it works like this: when we come across something new that is not explained by our previous knowledge or experiences, an information gap is formed.

In my view, one of the most important aspects of being a successful entrepreneur is surrounding yourself with people smarter than you. Top entrepreneurs spend more time putting the right team in place to accomplish their objectives than they spend on many other components of their job. Some entrepreneurs are so in love with themselves (narcissistic) that they insist on answering every question, and making every decision.

Reza Bundy , the founder of Venice-based Mota Motors , looks to be a major beneficiary of an IPO -- not of his current firm, but of his prior company, Iron Planet. In papers filed Thursday evening by Iron Planet, the Pleasanton-based firm said it is looking to raise up to $92M in an IPO on the NASDAQ Global Market. Bundy founded Iron Planet, which is venture backed by Accel Partners, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, as well as Caterpillar and Komatsu America.

Technologists often insist that new things can’t be invented on a schedule, but successful companies seem to be able to do it. Many people have tried to define a process for innovation, but most are too abstract for me.

I’ve noticed a great tendency among startup founders to ignore the essentials of business accounting in the early stages of their startup. Just because you are not profitable yet, doesn’t mean you can skip the record keeping. In fact, just the opposite is true. When you anticipate losses for the first year or two, it is more important to properly document all expenses, including tricky ones like business travel, business meals, and your home office.

Los Angeles-based Magento Commerce , a developer of open source, e-commerce software tools, has raised $22.5M in an equity funding round, according to a regulatory filing by the firm today. During MIX10 Microsoft announced the Silverlight Rough Cut Editor (RCE). This open source tool provides real time editing for Silverlight Smooth Streaming content.
