Long Beach To Gain New, 400MWh Energy Storage System

The City of Long Beach will be the site of a new, 400 megawatt-hour battery-based energy storage system, as part of Southern California Edison's (SCE) support of California's clean energy efforts, according to power plant operator AES Alamitos. The subsidiary of energy company AES Corporation said it has broken ground on the new, 400 megawatt-hour (Mwh) battery-based energy storage system, at part of a modernization project at the AES Alamitos Generating Station. The battery storage allows the system to insert power to the power grid at times of peak demand, with energy from that system contracted to Southern California Edison (SCE). According to AES, the move will help California meet its "aggressive target" of 100 percent clean energy by 2045. The battery-based energy storage system is coming from Fluence. The new energy storage system helps replace natural gas peak power production systems with more efficient, cycle-based gas capacity with battery energy storage to inject power when needed into the power grid. AES Alamitos said it expects to project to be complete in late 2020.
