3D Robotics has raised over $5 million in round two funding to accelerate its growth and expansion into new markets says Chris Anderson  3DR CEO and former Editor in Chief of Wired Magazine, Entrepreneur and author.

According to Anderson, the round was led by Jon Callaghan at True Ventures and Bryce Roberts of O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures , both joining the 3DR board.

He said, “These are two of the most far-seeing VCs in the Valley, and both are part of the “hardware is the new software” trend, including investments in Fitbit, Makerbot, Littlebits and Instructables. And they share our vision of the power of open source, the Maker movement and personal robotics.

Anderson also added that another investor, Chris Michel, will join the board as an investor and board member.

Co-founder, Jordi Munoz now becomes 3DR President overseeing operations.

Anderson is opportunistic that the funding round and him joining the firm as CEO will propel the firm to new heights.

Currently the firm has 40 full time staff but will be hiring more hardware and software engineers.

The firm will also be launching a new 3D Robotics store, new product sites, manuals and expand its tech support communities and support team.

Anderson says the wave of exciting new products is a move to make drones and overall aerial robotics technology powerful, easier and affordable than ever before.

“The aim of this ramp-up is simple: more cool stuff and a great customer and community experience,” he said.

3DR will soon open an office in the SF Bay Area  dubbed 3DR North to do its sales/marketing and community development. While the the San Diego headquarters will still remain as the firm’s R&D and engineering center and Tijuana will be expanded to handle more.
