Semtech Links With Blockchain Startup For Nationwide Network

Camarillo-based analog and mixed signal semiconductor developer Semtech says it has linked with peer-to-peer wireless network operator Helium, to develops a nationwide network supporting its LoRaWAN protocol. According to the companies, Helium's network is now fully compatible with the LoRaWAN protocol, which will allow "hundreds of millions" of LoRa-based devices to connect nationwide. Financial details of the deal were not announced. Helium says it has created open-source blockchain technology, where individuals are incentivized to deploy Helium Hotspots, which simultaneously mine cryptocurrency and provide LoRaWAN network coverage for hundreds of square miles. Helium is venture backed by GV (formerly Google Ventures), Khosla Ventures, Union Square Ventures, Multicoin Capital, FirstMark, Marc Benioff, Shawn Fanning and others.
