The topic of whether in-stream advertising has heated up. I just read well written pieces on the topic by Ross Kimbarovsky , Robert Scoble , Paul Carr and the NY Times. I myself recently covered the topic when I spoke about why GRP Partners invested in Ad.ly. Let me lay out my defense of In-Stream Advertising because I believe the topic is really important. 1.

Los Angeles-based software-as-a-service developer CrownPeak has expanded the breadth of its offerings, saying this morning that it has launched a set of content management and marketing tools. CrownPeak said its new offering, the Online Marketing Management Suite, is targeted at online marketers, and helps them test, target, and measure content relevance in its web sites, landing pages, banner ads, mobile devices, social media, and other channnels.

Los Angeles-based Zubican , an online business-to-business marketplace, has been acquired by Inuvo, a Florida-based provider of performance-based online marketing services, Inuvo announced Monday. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Zubican was backed by $1.3M in seed funding from the Tech Coast Angels and Pasadena Angels. Inuvo said it will pay a royalty based on a percentage of the gross profit derived from Zubican's site over a four-year period.

In the last week, Seesmic released three new apps to much Internet fanfare: a native app for Windows (Seesmic for Windows), an app for Blackberry (Seesmic for Blackberry), and Seesmic for Android (guess the OS). As a self-proclaimed evangelist for the company’s software, I leaped at the opportunity to use the new Twitter tools. Unfortunately, we don’t have an Android phone handy but we did put the other two through the gauntlet.

Santa Monica-based Adconion Media Group , an online advertising network, announced today that it has acquired certain assets of Joost , the online video site founded by Skype founders Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom. Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed. Adconion Media said it would continue to operate Joost.com , and use it to bring additional "scale" and content to its network.

Details on the funding were not announced. Ace Metrix has previously raised funding from Hummer Winblad Venture Partners and Palomar Ventures.

San Diego-based Skinit , which developes technology to personalize electronic devices with personalized graphic skins, has inked a deal with kids virtual world Poptropica , the firm said this morning. According to Skinit, kids and parents can now personalize over 3,000 electronic devices with popular Poptropica characters and scenes. Financial details of the deal was not disclosed.

San Diego-based Receptos , a biopharmaceuticals firm based on technology out of the Scripps Research Insitute, announced today that it has raised $25M in the close of a two-tranche Series A financing. The firm said that the capital came from ARCH Venture Partners, Flagship Ventures, Lilly Ventures, and Venrock. Receptos is developing drug discovery technology which is based on research at The Scripps Research Institute.

The latest numbers out of Internet research firm comScore finds that Los Angeles-based Hulu , the online video streaming site, is rising rapidly in traffic, and has just hit 855 million video views, up significantly from the 583 million views it saw in September. The site now accounts for 3.1 percent of video views online. Google/YouTube continues to lead in video views, with 37.7 percent of the share of video views this month.

Thousand Oaks-based Xirrus , a developer of Wi-Fi networking hardware, has raised another $20M in funding, according to a regulatory filing from the firm today. Details on the new funding have not yet been announced by the company. The filing indicates that Nasr Khaled of Alta Partners has joined the firm's board along with the funding. Xirrus has previously raised funding from US Venture Partners, August Capital, Canaan Partners, and QuestMark Partners.

Torrance-based Amonix , a developer of concentrating photovoltaic solar systems, has raised $40M in a funding round, according to a filing by the firm Monday. The filing indicates the fundraising is part of a $98.23M funding effort being spearheaded by Lazard Freres & Company. Ben Kortland of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Mark Cirilli of MissionPoint Capital Partners are listed as directors of the firm.

Santa Monica-based Topspin Media , the developer of music and band marketing software headed by former Yahoo Music GM Ian Rogers, said over the weekend that it has added Andrew Mains as its new VP Artist Relations and Services. Mains was Head of New Media at Interscope Records. The firm said that Mains will help artists find their way to the firm's platform.

Aliso Viejo-based ecommerce provider Buy.com said today that the firm has added support for Amazon's payment services, Checkout by Amazon and Amazon PayPhrase. According to Buy.com, the firm recently added the support to its store, which allows Buy.com buyers to purchase products from the retail site using Amazon.com accounts. Buy.com reports that the payment method is now once of the top payment methods now being used on the site.

Carlsbad-based MaxLinear , a developer of radio frequency (RF) and mixed signal semiconductors, said Tuesday that it has added Donald Schrock to its board. Schrock has previously served at Qualcomm, Motorola, GM-Hughes Aircraft, Burr-Brown, and Applied Micro Circuit Corporation. At Qualcomm, Schrock was Group President of Qualcomm's CDMA Technologies Group.

The European Commission today announced that it has decided to close formal antitrust proceedings against San Diego-based Qualcomm , saying in a statement that "it does not consider it appropriate" to invest further resources into the case. The EC had opened up an investigation in October of 2007 to investigate alleged abuse by Qualcomm of its dominant market position.

San Diego-based Fallbrook Technologies , a developer of continuous variable planetary transmissions used for the automotive industry, has raised $4.0M in an equity funding, according to a recent regulatory filing by the firm. Details on the funding have not been released by Fallbrook. The filing indicates that 27 investors were involved in the funding.

Los Angeles-based Hulu , which streams major television shows and other videos to users, announced this morning that it has launched a new user tagging function. The firm said that users of the site can now create custom keywords or category labels, allowing users to group and discover new videos on the site. The firm allows any user to add tags to any video on the site, as well as allows those users to search for other similarly tagged videos.

San Diego-based OnTech , a maker of self-heating coffee and other beverages, has gone under, according to the firm's web site. According to OnTech online store, the firm shut down on November 8th. OnTech made canned beverages which used quicklime and water self-heating technology to warm up drinks by just pulling a tab, and were distributed through Wal-Mart, Kroger, Sam's Club, and other retailers.

San Diego-based Skinit , a provider of personalized electronic "skins", has inked a deal with photo sharing site Photobucket, the firm said today. SkinIt said that the two firms have teamed up to allow users of Photobucket to transfer their images direct to Skinit.com. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Skinit allows users to user their own photos to create "skins" for electronic devices like phones, laptops, and MP3 players.
