Hollywood-based io/LA , the high tech and creative incubator and coworking space, has shut down, the first loss of one of Southern California's new crop of high tech gathering spaces. The loss was first reported by the LA Business Journal. io/LA, in a note sent to its members last week, obtained by socalTECH, said that "unexpected things happen" in the startup world, and that it will be "sailing off into the sunset".

However, the Beatles' early career was a series of failures, culminating in their unsuccessful audition with the leading record company of their era, Decca Records. This particular failure nearly caused the band to breakup.

In Web Framework Benchmarks , there are some very interesting and surprising numbers around the performance of various web frameworks. Startup Founders really need to see these numbers. And I hope you are not running on Cake PHP when you see these numbers. Many of us are putting more into the front-end and having the application logic and back-end exposed through JavaScript (JSON) APIs.

Book review and community Goodreads , which was founded in Santa Monica by Otis Chander, has been acquired by Amazon.com , Amazon said Thursday afternoon. Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed. Goodreads' site revolves around sharing book recommendations and networking between book readers. Goodreads was venture backed by True Ventures, Mike Jones (now at Science, Inc.), James Currier, Michael Birch, Chris Michel, and Stan Chudnovsky.

Things definitely look to be heating up in the software recruiting world, at least, if you judge the latest offer from a local startup to find local recruits for software developers. Los Angeles-based Paedae , which is develops software aimed at mobile and online application developers with marketing and monetization, said Tuesday that it will offer the chance at a flight to space--or $200,000--to a new hire.

It looks like the sale of book review and community Goodreads was worth between $150M to $200M, according to a report form AllThingsD Friday, potentially making the acquisition one of the better returns on capital from a Southern California technology startup in recent years. Goodreads--while now located in San Francisco--was started and ran out of Santa Monica for years, and had the backing of such local angels as Mike Jones (now at Science Inc.).

Santa Monica-based ParkMe , the venture-backed developer of mobile parking information applications, said today that it has inked a deal with Washington, D.C.-based parking operator Colonial Parking. ParkMe said that it will provide real-time occupancy information for more than 100 parking facilities in DC via the deal. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

I was invited along with Kluge’s CEO, Arturo Perez , to listen to five companies from the class pitch their ideas. Starting and running a company is a team effort. Yes, it takes a leader (entrepreneur), but you can’t do it alone, without a team. Maybe only you and a co-founder comprise the team at first, to provide key skills, back you up, and test your ideas. As the startup grows, the team has to be able to really push you in making growth decisions, rather than you pulling them along.

'The recent firing of Groupon’s CEO Andrew Mason is a cautionary tale of the increased scrutiny and heightened expectations that come from accessing increasingly larger amounts of investment capital. If Groupon remained a bootstrapped entity or a business built on the back of funds raised from friends and family, Mason would still be firmly entrenched as founder and Chief Executive.

DogVacay , the online peer-to-peer marketplace for dog sitting services, announced today that it has released its own, iPhone application which makes it easier for its hosts to manage bookings through the service. DogVacay said that the new app lets hosts accept bookings, message customers, create custom quotes, and send photo updates from their phone.

Add another startup accelerator to the growing list of Southern California startup accelerators: this time, from the University of Southern California's Viterbi School of Engineering. USC revealed this morning that it has created a new, startup accelerator on campus, the Viterbi Startup Garage , which will help students and alumni start technology companies in Los Angeles.

As a start-up mobile app development company, ROAR focuses on the non-profit and church verticals. More details on the University of Southern California 's new Viterbi Startup Garage , the brand new startup accelerator being backed by the United Talent Agency and Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers, have emerged, with the school saying that it plans to provide grants and mentorship to approximately 10 companies for a 12 week session starting in May.

It is not common for the CEO of a rapidly growing company to think of slowing down the furious pace enough to have each manager (including the CEO) document the job process managed, as well as see to the documentation for each process managed below. And it is even more of a challenge to consider documenting the tribal knowledge of a company’s key employees.

This past year, I’ve heard more and more about a new type of small business, called a “micro-business” (or micro-enterprise). These are usually characterized as owner-operated, with five employees or less, and less than $250,000 in sales. With the low cost of e-commence entry, and powerful Internet technologies, they require minimal capital to start, perhaps as little as $500.

Los Angeles-based online advertising technology provider OpenX announced this morning that it has named Matthew Reid as its new Vice President of Marketing. Reid previously was SVP of Marketing for Gehry Technologies, and also served at Eucalyptus Systems and Expertcity (Citrix Online), where he was responsible for launching GoToMeeting. OpenX said that Reid will oversee branding, customer acquisition and product marketing.
