Emotive Hires Matt Cooley As President, COO
Matt Cooley, Emotive president and chief operating officer.

Sawtelle-based text messaging software platform 317 Labs Inc., which does business as Emotive, hired Matt Cooley as the company’s new president and chief operating officer.

Cooley was the company’s first major investor in 2019 and has since served as its primary go-to-market advisor, Emotive said in its announcement on Aug. 19. The hire follows the company’s $50 million Series B funding round in February.

Cooley is a 20-year veteran of the tech industry. Most recently, he served as president and chief operating officer of Skael Inc., a San Francisco-based digital workforce platform, and remains as a member of the company's board.

He was previously chief revenue officer at software company Quip from 2016 to mid-2020, and built and managed the global sales team at cloud computing company New Relic Inc. from 2010 to 2014.

Cooley’s position with Emotive is his first with a Los Angeles-based company.

“Just over two years ago, Matt (Cooley) wrote the first sizable check in Emotive when we were less than 10 people with a few handful of customers,” Brian Zatulove, chief executive and co-founder of Emotive, said in a statement. “We couldn't be more excited to see Matt double down on the company during this explosive period of growth.”

Founded in 2018, Emotive offers a software platform for companies to communicate with customers through text messages. Rather than using one-way marketing text blasts, it offers two-way communication for customers and businesses.

Emotive grew tremendously over the past year, expanding its headcount to 192 from 41 while its revenue jumped 466% during 2020.

“As an early investor in Emotive, I saw the potential for the company to disrupt the entire ecommerce industry — and placed an early bet on its success,” Cooley said. “SMS has more engagement and open rates than any other ecommerce channel.”

In the past year, Emotive added several members to its executive team, including Oleg Pylnev as chief technology officer, Adam Waid as chief customer officer, Greg Brauner as senior vice president of marketing, Joe Cuccinelli as vice president of product and Ben Peterson as vice president of finance.
