Western Digital Rolls Out New NVMe SSD

Western Digital, the mass storage products developer which has a significant presence in Irvine, said this morning that it has rolled out a new, NVMe version of its solid state disk drives (SSDs). According to Western Digital, it has added an NVMe model to its WD Blue solid state disk drive line, which gives them three times the performance of its SATA versions. NVMe (non-volatile memory express) is a newer standard used for interfacing memory and storage to computer systems, and is based on the PCIe memory bus standard. The standard was developed by a group of vendors that include Intel, Samsung, Sandisk, Dell, and others to accelerate data storage and remove some of the bottlenecks in existing interfaces. According to Western Digital, its new WD Blue NVMe SSD have sequential read speeds of up to 1,700 MB/s, and write speeds of 1,450 MB/s. The new WD Blue SN500 NVMe SSDs--available in 250GB and 500GB--will cost $54.99 for 250GB and $77.99 for 500GB, according to the company.
