Branchout , often called LinkedIn meets Facebook, has done a lot in their application to provide users motivation and opportunity to spread the word about the service. The purpose of Branchout is helping people to network their way to jobs. However, funny enough, I don't see the job search and showing you who you know at the company as being particularly well done.

I had the privilege of keynoting at the Founder Showcase tonight in San Francisco. Adeo asked me to speak about fund raising. I generally don’t like to speak about fund raising in a frothy market. If you’re bullish you seem like a Cramer-esque cheerleader and if you’re bearish you sound like a party pooper. But Adeo asked so I obliged.

You may be an architect or doctor or other professional managing your business, knowing that the end game value of your client or patient list is small and not easily transferred to any buyer without attrition. In Don’t Be A Grin F**ker , Mark Suster describes a concept that the two of us have discussed at various Board meetings. Startups often expend significant resources attempting to coax a relationship out of someone who smiles and says all the right things, yet whose inactions are inconsistent with their alleged intentions. Entrepreneurs who are self aware and have the Whole Package are less prone to being successfully grin screwed.

Car Town , the automotive-themed, Facebook social game developed by Long Beach-based Cie Games , has inked a deal with NASCAR , where NASCAR will launch the NASCAR Pro Championship presented by Sprint, a social gaming event within Car Town. According to NASCAR, the game will be free to play, and will allow users to compete against othres in challenges and activities, racing against virtual drivers within the social networking game.

Every investor expects to see some business traction, both before and after a funding event. If you have been working 20 hours a day, and spent your last dollar, but have no results to show, investors will be sympathetic, but will probably tell you that your dream doesn’t have wheels. Traction means forward progress. I hear a lot of entrepreneurs contemplating their great “idea” for several years with little discernable progress, and looking for money to start.

Proving that you can apply the "daily deal" phenomenon to just about any transaction, Santa Monica-based Edmunds.com said today that it has launched its own, deal service it says was inspired by Groupon and LivingSocial. Edumunds said its "Edmunds Exclusives" will provide exclusive offers from car dealers and automakers, and will also include offers for dealer repairs and parts, maintenance and body shops, aftermarket audio dealers and auto broker services.

Successful entrepreneurs are usually hard-driving, and highly focused on some specific goals, like being the dominant player in a given domain, or the low-priced provider of their product. Yet other entrepreneurs will talk for hours about all their ideas, and how they intend to change the world, but I don’t hear any specific goals or milestones. Many people are very hesitant to set specific goals, due to lack of self-confidence or whatever.

Santa MOnica-based BeachMint , the celebrity e-commerce site started by former MySpace founder Josh Berman and Diego Berdakin, said Friday afternoon that it has raised $23.5M in a new funding round. The round was led by Scale Venture Partners and Lightbank. Prior investors New Enterprise Associates, Trinity Ventures, and Anthem Ventures also participated in the new financing round.

South Park , the animated TV series created by Trek Parker and Matt Stone, has inked a deal with Los Angeles-based streaming video site Hulu , to feature nearly every episode of South Park on Hulu Plus. According to Hulu, Hulu Plus subscribers will get access to both the current season of South Park -- 21 days after they air--plus all fifteen seasons of shows of the series.

Yorba Linda-based Gigi Hill , a manufacturer of handbags and totes distributed through in-home parties, has raised $3M in a Series A funding. The funding came from Maveron, the venture capital firm founded by Starbucks founder Howard Schultz and Dan Levitan. Other investors in the round included Trinity Ventures and Mark Vadon, who co-founded Blue Nile and Zulily.

Path , the developers of the eponymous app for the iPhone, has come up with a mobile check in app with a focus on who you’re with. In their original app, Path, the developers focused more on sharing a picture or moment privately with a select group of friends. At a recent hackathon, the company saw that their users also wanted to selectively share their moments on public social networks, such as Twitter.

If you are a first-time entrepreneur, I often recommend that you team with a co-founder with experiences, connections, and a skill set that complements, but doesn’t duplicate yours. Even experienced entrepreneurs need a partner to strengthen their position. The question is how to find that elusive perfect-fit partner. First, I will admit there is no magic formula here, just like in real life when trying to find a relationship partner.

Santa Monica-based Savings.com , the online coupon and coupon code site headed by Loren Bendele, is expanding its focus to travel savings, the firm said today. Savings.com said it will begin offering up deals on summer travel starting next week, on June 21st, including deals on hotels, rental cars, flights, and attractions. Savings.com said the deals will include exclusives from Travelocity and Orbitz.

Champagne glasses must be clinking for a few, lucky Southern California investors and executives this morning, as the IPO of Oakland-based Pandora Media had a rousing welcome on Wall Street. Pandora was trading as high as $26.00 Wednesday during morning trading, after pricing at $16.00 per share last night, well above the $10.00 to $12.00 estimated pricing range from last week.
