Los Angeles-based SubPac , a new startup which is developing a wearable vest and seatback device which lets users feel their music, has raised $6M in a Series A financing. The funding came from Richie Hawtin, Dada Life, Azure Capital, M7 Tech Partners, and Andy Rubin of Playground Global. M7 Tech Partners is the ivnestment fund of the NBA's Carmelo Anthony, and Rubin is the co-creator of Google Android.

That made some people think of taco bowls and love Hispanics. Whatever. Unfortunately, as a startup advisor and angel investor, I’ve seen too many ventures with great potential get destroyed or set back by legal and other shortcuts that should never have been allowed to happen. According to Qualcomm, it has rolled out a deep learning software development kit (SDK), which will run on its Snapdragon 820 processors, which will allow its users to developing deep learning devices.

In my view, starting a new business has never been easier, and according to reports from the Kaufmann Foundation , the numbers are finally here to show it. The number of startups rose in 2015 for the first time in five years, with the largest year-over-year increase in two decades. Over 500,000 new businesses were created last year, or about one per minute of every day.

Today, there’s a complete disrespect for what it takes to build a business. Too many people think they can become an entrepreneur overnight and establish a real business in a 1-2 year window, but it’s just not realistic. And I get it, because that’s what’s portrayed in the media we see every day. With Shark Tank , The Social Network , and all of these “unicorns” with quick exits and huge payouts, I can understand why the sentiment is skewed.

Woodland Hills-based United Online said Wednesday afternoon that it has agreed to be acquired by B. Riley Financial , in a deal worth $170M in cash, or $11.00 per share. According to a statement from interim CEO Jeff Goldston, the deal came after an "extensive process" to explore a "full range of strategic alternatives". The company said it will allow its only remaining operating business--its communications segment--to continue under B.

Two, Los Angeles area investors--venture investment firm Greycroft Pratners , and angel investor Paige Craig --are among the investors seeing an exit today, as Adobe said acquired blog commenting tools maker LiveFyre. Financial terms of the acquisition were not announced. Paige Craig--as well as a number of other angels--originally seeded LiveFyre back in 2010.

Aliso Viejo-based 360fly , which develops a single lens, 360-degree video camera, has raised $40M in a Series C funding, the company said Thursday. The funding was led by L Catterton, Hydra Ventures, and Qualcomm Ventures in the funding. Hydra Ventures is the venture capital arm of adidas Group. Los Angeles-based subscription wine service Club W said this morning that it has raised $17.5M in a Series B funding, and renamed itself to Winc. Winc said that the funding was co-led by Chinese investor Shining Capital, and also included Bessemer Venture Partners. ClubW offers up a personalized, wine delivery club, which delivers wines to users based on their tastes and preferences.

Three, local Los Angeles organizations -- DIY Girls , LA Maker Space , and Teens Exploring Technology (TXT), have scored nonprofit funding from Google, as part of the 2016 Google RISE Awards , according to the groups. On-demand, alcohol delivery startup Drizly said this morning that it has expanded its service to San Diego, offering up delivery of beer, wine, and spirits to users across the Gaslamp, Hillcrest, La Jolla, Little Italy, Mission Beach, North Park, Ocean Beach, Old Town, Pacific Beach and Torrey Pines neighborhoods. The company--which has been in Orange County since last year--says the expansion comes in partnership with local companies Quality Market and Chip's Liquor.
