Disney Backs Effort To Give Girls A Head Start On STEM

Burbank-based Disney is backing an effort, in conjunction with learning robot developer littleBits and UC Davis, the give girls a boost in getting into science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. According to the threee this morning, the have launched a new program in California, called Snap The Gap, which will help 10 year old girls learn technology and science with hands-on-learning. The new effort is aimed at getting women into STEM, with a focus on hands-on learning, a peer community, and mentorship, centered around a kit from littleBits. According to the group, the effort is being funded by the Walt Disney Company, which is putting $4M into the effort. The companies said littleBits will donate around 15,00 STEAM Starter Packs in the first year of the program, with a plan to eventually reach all of the United States in 10 years.
