This is part of my Startup Advice series. I had a picture in the office of my first company with the logo above and the capital letters JFDI. (In case it’s not obvious it’s a play on the Nike slogan, “Just Do It.&# ) I believe that being successful as an entrepreneur requires you to get lots of things done. You are constantly faced with decisions and there is always incomplete information.

I’ve recently had a chance to reconnect with Eric David Greenspan ( LinkedIn , Twitter ) He’s the CEO of Make It Work a high quality, personal, high touch technology service provider for homes and small businesses. He’s done several startups and is a board member of the Technology Council of Southern California (which is where I met him originally).

Pasadena-based eSolar , the Idealab startup developing solar thermal power plant technology, said today that it has added George (Chip) A. Hambro, the retired Chief Operating Officer of First Solar, to its board of directors. Hambro was at First Solar for eight years, through its IPO. Hambro has also served at Goodrich Aerospace and ITT. eSolar is developing technolog for solar thermal power, which are being applied to utility-scale solar power projects.

One of the things I noticed was that when really talented people – The “A players&# – wanted to quit, the firm would quickly scramble to try and keep that person from resigning. Los Angeles-based Total Beauty , the women's fashion and beauty site headed by Emrah Kovacoglu, reports today that the firm has hit the number 4 position in comScore's ranking of beauty/fashion sites. Total Beauty also said it is number one in terms of time spent per visit. Total Beauty operates an online site focused on fashion and beauty, including user-generated reviews and daily editorial information.

I was born in Cleveland and went to high school in North Canton (after 8 years in Palm Springs, California). I was about to attend OSU when I left Ohio to return to California. I’ve been in Santa Barbara for 22+ years, completed UCSB a long, long time ago. Still a Buckeye fan at heart. Ohio was very different from California. When I arrived in 9th grade, I was kind of a “surf punk&# wearing K-Swiss and corduroy OP shorts.

Santa Monica-based Mahalo , the online search site headed by Jason Calacanis, rolled out version 3.0 of the firm's web site. The new version of the site is looking to combine search, content, and Q&A. According to an email from Calacanis to his private email list, "Essentially what we're doing is making a bigger and better Wikipedia with a revenue-sharing model.

San Diego-based Flux Power , a developer of lithium batteries and charging systems, said late last night that it has introduced a new family of products aimed at the industrial, solar, EV, wind, and peak-shaving power markets. The firm--which spun out of LHV Power last month and is headed by former Aptera co-founder Chris Anthony--said it s systems are geared towards providing safe, power, and cost effective energy storage.

Last week, some of the Zune team invited us to their pad to check out the long-awaited social features Microsoft was releasing for Xbox Live. The event, a casual private party at Zune LA, gave us some hands-on time with those social features: integration with Facebook , Twitter , and Last.fm , as well as the release of Zune-branded entertainment available on Xbox Live.

This week's release of a list of their "Top 100" venture capitalists by AlwaysOn -- based roughly on number and dollar amount of successful M&A and IPO deals between October 1, 2005 to September 30, 2009--seems to have skipped local Southern California venture capitalists, with only one Southern California VCs listed. According to the list, just Jim Gauer of Palomar Ventures , made the cut.

This morning, Los Angeles-based Lottay (www.lottay.com) launched its online gifting site, announced its funding by DFJ Frontier, and also the appointment of former Evite GM Harry Lin as CEO. We spoke with Harry yesterday about the company. Harry, thanks for the interview. What's the idea behind Lottay? Los Angeles-based Lottay , an online gifting web site, is announcing this morning that it has raised $475,000 in a funding round, and appointed former Evite.com and ABC.com executive Harry Lin as its CEO. The funding round was led by DFJ Frontier. Other backers of the firm include Steve Blank, CEO of Epiphany and Klaus Schauser founder of Citrix Online.

Hollywood-based Friendgiftr , a developer of a Facebook application selling retail and restaurant gift cards, disclosed today that it has received funding from a member of the Tech Coast Angels. Amount and timing of the funding was not disclosed. Friendgiftr allows Facebook users to buy and send real and digital gift cards to their friends and family through the Facebook platform.

Pasadena-based Central Desktop , the developer of online project management software headed by Isaac Garcia, has gone live with the firm's new integration with Zoho Spreadsheets tool. The firm said the spreadsheet support went live this week. The new use of Zoho comes shortly after the firm announced it was swapping providers of its spreadsheet functionality, from EditGrid to Zoho, due to EditGrid pulling support for its licenses.

Vista-based electric vehicle maker Aptera , on the heels of the departure of the firm's co-founders, has officially pushed back deliver of the firm's Aptera 2e vehicle, acknowledged the departure of co-founders Chris Anthony and Steve Fambro, and said it has laid of an unspecified number of staff. The firm said in a statement that the firm's vehicle development has "outpaced the rate of fundraising" at the firm, and it is now adjusting its production schedule to "align with financing realities.

Los Angeles-based Digiboo , a new startup focused on allowing consumers to rent films on flash drives, at retail kiosks, has scored funding from Revelations Entertainment , the production firm owned by actor Morgan Freeman and Lori McCreary. Amount of the funding was not disclosed. Digiboo is headed by Richard Cohen, formerly an executive at MGM Home Entertainment and Consumer Products.

Electronics Arts is shutting down Los Angeles-based Pandemic Studios , according to an internal note leaked to gaming news site Kotaku. According to the note, Electronic Arts has laid off around 200 employees, and transitioned the rest to Electronic Arts' Los Angeles office. EA bought Pandemic in 2007, in a deal worth $775M. Los Angeles-based UNX , a provider of technology for the electronic trading and institutional investing market, has scored a round of strategic funding and named a CEO, the firm said Tuesday. The funding came from Goldman, Sachs & Co. and Vernon & Park Capital, along with un-named, current investors. UNX said the new funding will go to support enhancing the firm's broker-neutral, electronic trading products and serviecs.

Los Angeles-based Stickam.com , an operator of a live streaming video site and associated services, has launched into the iPhone market today, saying it has provided a new API for third-party integration of live streaming into iPhone apps. Stickam said its iPhone SDK allows third parties to integrate live streaming into any iPhone app, using Apple Quicktime's H.265 HTTP live streaming functions.
