My pal Dave has blogger Tourette’s. He has it on stage, too, at conferences. He can’t help himself: He’s Dave. My pal Dave has problems. Not the ones you’d imagine. His biggest problems are with language, colors, fonts and spacing. Not much more. I think he could say “no” a bit more. I’ve told him that if a vet just clipped his wings a little bit I think it would be good for his health.

As I write this, the articles and comments about my company’s demise continue. Thankfully, for every angry investor or customer, there is someone amazing who says something supportive and kind. Someone called my company a scam today. Do they really believe that? After 11 years and hundreds of thousands of satisfied house calls, 39,000 glowing testimonials, our hearts and souls and hundreds of employees, a scam, really?

When a new CEO or manager is hired into a company, for a while lots of energy flows from the top and new ideas seem to be generated daily. It is one reason not to fear the unknown when upper level management long in place turns over, often leaving most everyone worrying over how they’ll ever do without their lost leader. The problem seems to come after everyone settles back into some sort of normalcy and the new senior manager becomes comfortable in his or her position.

Huntington Beach-based AnyMeeting , which provides free web conferencing and online meeting services, is announcing this morning that it is aiming at large "network marketing" firms with a new program. The company, which is backed by the Tech Coast Angels, Pasadena Angels and Maverick Angels, said its new "Quick Start" program will provide those network marketers with a free, company-branded web conferencing tool, which can be made available to all of those firms' distributors at no cost.

This article originally appeared on TechCrunch HERE. My son recently tried to call one of our older relatives. He dialed the number and quickly hung up with a confused look on his face. I asked him what was wrong and he replied, “I don’t know. There’s something wrong with their phone, it kept beeping.” I called the number and was amused to hear a landline busy signal, something my cell phone centric pre-teen had never encountered.

Southern California's largest angel investment group, the Tech Coast Angels , looks to be one of the lead investors nationally in angel-backed companies, according to a report released Monday by the Angel Resource institute. The group, along with Silicon valley Bank and CB Insights, released the 1Q 2012 Halo Report , which summarized Q1 angel investments.

On Tuesday, July 10, Crowdfunder hosted Crowdstart LA, the first crowdsourced startup contest at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica. The event was sold out, attracting founders, angels, VC’s and future entrepreneurs in the LA Startup Community. A total of 10 startups made up of 5 companies that received the most votes from the crowd and 5 companies chosen by the Angels and VC judges pitched in front of a live audience for a chance of winning $25,000 in funding.

The firm said today that it has launched two, new electronic book series, part of what the firm said is the "next chapter" of its Demand Studios efforts. Engineers at the University of California, Los Angeles have created the world's fatest camera, and are using it to help detect cancer cells and detecting disease, the school said last week. UCLA said that the team at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, led by Bahram Jalali, developed a digital camera able to process 100,000 cells per second in blood samples, approximately 100 times higher than conventional, image-based blood analyzers.

Every time I challenge a business plan with little or no budget for marketing, I get the answer that they will be using “viral” marketing, which costs nothing. The founder explains that the product is so “buzz-worthy” that usage will spread rapidly through word-of-mouth only, meaning people loving it and recommending it to their friends. First of all, Seth Godin pointed out a few years ago that viral marketing does not equal word-of-mouth.

Santa Monica-based telephony API provider CallFire reported today that it has just passed 50,000 users for its service. CallFire, which is led by Dinesh Ravishanker, also said that it recently passed $10M in sales and is profitable. The service allows businesses to create voice and text messaging applications via its cloud-based telephony API, including call tracking, IVR, text messaging, voice broadcasting, and other apps.

Since my background includes software development, I often get the question about when to build a solution in-house, versus outsourcing it to a local company, near-shore service, or off-shore organization in China, India, or Eastern Europe. In the USA, “near-shore” is a euphemism for connected countries, like Mexico and Canada. There is no simple answer to that question for all cases, but there certainly are some key considerations which will help you select the optimal solution for your case.

Google has from late last year embarked on an in-house cleaning project. The giant search engine is set to end less used products or combining a number of them into more resourceful ones. In November 2011, Google’s spring clean saw a number of services shut down like Knol, Friend Connect and Google Wave. This added the number of services closed or combined to thirty and as usual paving way for superior ones.

A virtual currently startup, Pocket Change , with links to Southern California has just raised $5M more in funding. The firm, which provides virtual currency handling for Android game makers, is the startup of Ari Mir, who formerly co-founded GumGum, and Amos Elliston, who served as CTO at Geni and SVP of Engineering at Yammer. The new round apparently was led by Google Ventures, and also included former investors First Round Capital, Baroda Ventures, and angels, including Los Angeles investors

For those who think that bankruptcy is the easy way out, think again. Bankruptcy should always be the absolutely last resort. The “advantage” of filing for bankruptcy, of course, is that it gets creditors permanently off your back, with no continuing lawsuits, based on funds derived from selling all assets.
