Semtech Powers New Product To Find Abnormal Energy Use On The Grid

Camarillo-based Semtech, the developer of analog and mixed signal semiconductors, has applied its LoRa low power wireless networking technology to a new product, which detects abnormal spikes in energy consumption in city substations. According to the company, NetOP, a developer and manufacturer of low power, wide area network (LPWAN)-based Internet of Things (IoT) applications, is using its technology to detect swings in energy usage and respond to, prevent or address malfunctions, illegal activity or other hazards to the energy grid. NetOP's solution is called "Octopus". Semtech said that platform's use cases include the prevention and swift response to electrical fires and the detection and geolocation of illegal indoor grow operations.
