Snapchat Has Bigger Share of New Users in U.S., but Instagram Is Closing the Gap

More new users are signing up for Snapchat than Instagram in the United States – but probably not for long, according to new data from marking analytics company Jumpshot, reports Recode. In August, 52 percent of new U.S. users signed up for Snapchat, compared to 48 percent for Instagram.

SpaceX Files Paper for ‘Starlink’ Constellation

Representatives for SpaceX in late August filed documents with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for “Starlink,” a potential name for its proposed network of nearly 12,000 satellites that would transmit high-speed internet connectivity to users on the ground as soon as 2024, reports Florida Today. SpaceX’s plans to enter the communications industry by launching an internet-beaming satellite constellation.

Herb Scannell Tapped as CEO of Mitu

Herb Scannell, a media exec who headed Nickelodeon and BBC Worldwide North America, has joined Latino digital-media company Mitu as chief executive, reports Variety. Scannell will assume the chief executive position immediately, based at Mitu’s headquarters in downtown Los Angeles. Co-founder Roy Burstin, who had been chief executive since the company was founded in 2012, has resigned.
