Livestrong.com Launches Online Nutrition Tool For Diabetes

Santa Monica-based LIVESTRONG.COM , the online health site run by Demand Media in conjunction with the Lance Armstrong Foundation, announced this morning that it has launched a new online tool it is calling MyPlate D, for online nutrition tracking. The site is targeted at people with diabetes, to help them control the disease. According to the site, the new product allows users to track calories, fat, protein, and carbohydrates for more than 625,000 food items.

Friendgiftr Launches Facebook Gift Card App

Hollywood-based Friendgiftr , an angel funded startup developing Facebook applications, said today that it has launched a new Facebook application which allows users to send real gift cards to friends, family, and others. The startup said it is now offering over 120 U.S. merchants through its app, which allows users to send both physical and digital gift cards via the popular Facebook social networking site.

Geni Creates Lab Effort, Translation Support

West Hollywood-based Geni.com , the online family tree and genealogy site backed by the Founders Fund and Charles River Ventures, told its users today that it has created a new "Geni Lab" for experimental features from the firm. As part of the lab, the company said it has created a new feature to enable translation of pages on the site, tapping Google Translate for the translations.

Rubicon Project: 270 Percent Year over Year Growth

Los Angeles-based Rubicon Project , the online advertising optimization service firm headed by Frank Addante, is claiming this morning that the firm saw 270%, year over year growth in 2009. According to the firm, it served up more than 350 billion ads through its platform this year. The firm did not disclose any financial, but said it now has 150 employees.

Tesla Kicks Off Promo From LA Store

Electric car firm Tesla Motors is looking to clog up traffic a bit more along Santa Monica boulevard this morning, as the firm kicks off a 2,700 mile roadtrip starting at its Los Angeles store at 10 today. According to Tesla, Tesla Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen, its customers, and employees are gathering at the store this morning to kick off a road trip to the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.

Spark Networks Launches New Dating Site

Beverly Hills-based Spark Networks , which operates a network of online, vertical dating sites, said Friday that it has rolled out a new site, Spark.com. The new dating site consolidates members from two of the firm's other dating sites, AmericanSingles.com and Date.ca. Both of those sites are now redirecting users to the new Spark.com site. Spark Networks operates JDate.com, ChristianMingle.com, BlackSingles.com, and other vertical dating sites.

EA Mobile Ships Need For Speed SHIFT

Los Angeles-based EA Mobile , the mobile apps division of Electronic Arts, said Friday that its driving simulation game Need for Speed SHIFT debuted Friday on the Apple App Store. The game, which runs on the iPhone and iPod touch, includes multi-player support using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The application lists for $9.99. The app is a follow on to the firm's earlier iPhone title, Need for Speed Undercover, which was released in May.

According to Break, the deal calls for Clearleap to include a part of Break's video library in Clearleap's Content Marketplace, which is used by cable and IPTV providers for serving up their video on demand programming.

RealD, Sony Link On 3D TV Effort

Los Angeles-based RealD , a supplier of hardware for projecting 3D movies, and consumer electronics giant Sony are in a pact to bring 3D television to the market, the firms said Thursday. According to Sony and RealD, their technology partnership will aim to bring immersive, 3D home entertainment to consumers beginning next year, using Sony's LCD panel televisions in sync with 3D eyewear based on RealD's technology.

RealD Part of AVATAR Premiere

Los Angeles-based RealD said Tuesday afternoon that the firm is powering the U.S. premiere of James Cameron's AVATAR, at the Grauman Chinese Theatre. The firm, which develops 3D movie projection technology, said the premiere will be the first time 3D has been displayed in the theater. The theater recently installed RealD's XL Cinema System. The U.S. premiere is set for Wednesday.

Los Angeles-based entertainment news blog Deadline.com is trumpeting its readership numbers today, saying that the site had 1,111,000 unique visitors in November, more than industry publications Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. The site, run by Nikke Finke, was acquired by Mail.com in June. Quoting comScore ratings data, Deadline.com said it had over 1.1M unique visitors in November, compared with only 515,000 unique visitors to Variety.com and 336,000 unique visitors to HollywoodReporter.com

Costa Mesa-based Emulex , a developer of storage networking products, said today that it has signed a deal with Alacritech, a developer of TCP/IP offload technology, which will give it access to Alacritech's patent portfolio. Financial details of the licensing deal were not disclosed. Emulex said the deal will give it access to support for Microsoft's Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) Chimney architecture for its OneConnect network adapter line.
