photoIn today’s world we’re connected to friends in ways that in the past could have never been imagined. At the touch of a button you can be connected with friends around the world. Today, Ribbon launches their mobile application to take us beyond our now traditional social connections to allowing us a glimpse into the future. I had the chance to sit down with the Founder & CEO to learn all the exciting details of Ribbon at our TechZulu Tech Lounge during this year’s (2013) SXSW conference.

“Social is inherently based on future plans,” remarked – Tony Alfaro, Ribbon’s founder and CEO

The Ribbon App, developed by the world-class development team at Fueled, represents a significant evolution from the current use of the social layer. By combining a map and a calendar into a single app, Ribbon provides visibility into where friends plan to be in the future. Users explore their future plans by either spinning the Ribbon Reel or sliding an intuitive time bar. Future locations of friends are displayed via dynamic pins on the users personalized TimeMap™. Users can create and join trips with friends, share plans externally on Facebook and Twitter, and engage with their personalized Ribbon feed that displays the future plans of the user and their friends.

“Ribbon provides significant value to users in exchange for sharing future travel and event plans. Whether planning to visit New York or London, a music festival, sporting event or car race, users can update their Ribbon and uncover social and business meeting opportunities that would not have otherwise existed. We envision Ribbon becoming an exciting and engaging utility that people will use and embrace as a part of their daily lives, whether at home or on the road.” – Tony Alfaro, Ribbon’s founder and CEO.

Ribbon uses a proprietary macro-location sharing methodology that alleviates privacy concerns by focusing on large demographic areas. This, says Alfaro, solves the “location privacy problem” where users do not want to share their exact location. Ribbon believes that users will feel more comfortable sharing a future location such as “Los Angeles” or “Chicago” as opposed to sharing a specific place and address.

The Ribbon App is available for free from the App Store on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
