Geni Debuts New Service, Geni Plus

West Hollywood-based Geni is expanding the number of paid tiers of its service, saying Tuesday evening that it has launched a new tier of its service, Geni Plus. The family tree and family history site said the new Geni Plus family tree research service is aimed at "casual genealogists", and will cost $4.95 a month. The new tier is below its Pro ($12.95/month) service, and according to the company comes as a result of "community feedback". Geni said in early August that it was limiting some of the features of its free service tier, which resulted in some amount of backlash from users; it looks as if the new tier is an attempt to provide many of the features users had lost in the switch to a paid service, but at a lower price point than the firm's Pro service. The new service tier lifts limits on the number of relatives that can be added to a family tree, includes unlimited virtual birthday and anniversary gifts, and export capability.
