Remember Santa Monica-based Mahalo , the startup headed by Jason Calacanis and backed by such investors as Sequoia Capital? Mahalo had initially focused on creating a human-curated search engine, but had seen some stumbles after major Google algorithm changes last year which caused a dropoff in the firm's search engine traffic.

Getting lots of notice--and controversy--at Demand Media for its use of writers to create content specifically to attract web traffic. They've acquired CAPTCHA security tools originally developed by Vidoop, and looking to market that technology to e-commerce web sites, social networking sites, and others looking to reduce spam and fraud.

Tyler Crowley, of Sqweal, Launch, ThisWeekInStartups, Open Angel Forum, and Mahalo, stopped by to give a quick coaching session on pitch prep. The 1st place winner was SnazzyRoom, an online styling tool for mixing and matching items on the web ( SnazzyRoom.com ). Sunday morning rolled around and it was down to crunch-time.

Gilt Group is currently the largest private sale web site in US. Read more: VentureWire (requires login) , Mahalo Profile Page. Configurable from desktop-based web-based UI. I don’t like going against Google Docs or against 37Signals for project management. Note that I’m not defining who numbers 1,2 are. Time will tell.
