io/LA Shuts Down

Hollywood-based io/LA, the high tech and creative incubator and coworking space, has shut down, the first loss of one of Southern California's new crop of high tech gathering spaces. The loss was first reported by the LA Business Journal. io/LA, in a note sent to its members last week, obtained by socalTECH, said that "unexpected things happen" in the startup world, and that it will be "sailing off into the sunset".

A number of companies which were located in io/LA have now moved to coworking space CrossCampus in Santa Monica, according to those companies. io/LA was best known for being co-founded by former Myspace Chief Technology Officer Aber Whitcomb; the space was hoping to bring together both the technology and entertainment industry in its space. The space currently occupied by io/LA's location will go back to private office firm WeWork, which had subleased its ground floor to io/LA; in its parting note, io/LA founder Chris Gartin said it would introduce its companies to the people at WeWork taking over the location. io/LA had only been in the space since April of last year.
