What's the latest craze in startups in Southern Califonia? In just the last few weeks, at least five different incubation/acceleration efforts have booted up in the region. K5Launch , which was announced yesterday, is headed up by Amir Banafatemi, Ray Chan, David Cheng, and Kai Tao, four Southern California angel investors.

There''s been a lot of activity over the past two years in the Southern California accelerator/incubator market, with numerous groups (Amplify, EvoNexus, K5, LaunchpadLA, MediaCamp, Science, StartEngine, and many, many others) looking to help entrepreneurs start and fund their companies. But, how successful have they been?

Adding another group to the growing list of Southern California startup accelerators and incubators: a new, Orange County incubator, Frost Venture Partners , looks to be gearing up to tackle the "big data" market.

A local entrepreneur, Mike Khristo, is launching a new, Y-Combinator style incubation and acceleration effort, LaunchSpark , after becoming frustrated by the lack of a similar incubation effort in SoCal. Khristo complains that there has been a lack of a Y Combinator style program in Southern California.

Pham, a SoCal native best known for his roles at Photobucket, Billshrink, and Color, will focus on marketing and business development for Science. Pham--who first cut his entrepreneurial chops in Orange County--had moved to Silicon Valley for his most recent roles; the new role at Science is his first in Southern California in awhile.

Amir Banifatemi: K5Launch supports our larger vision, the K5 initiative, which was promoted last year to provide a more stable and vibrant community of entrepreneurship in Southern California, but mostly Orange County. We are in Orange County, but we're also focused more largely on Southern California.
