Hollywood-based io/LA , the high tech and creative incubator and coworking space, has shut down, the first loss of one of Southern California's new crop of high tech gathering spaces. A number of companies which were located in io/LA have now moved to coworking space CrossCampus in Santa Monica, according to those companies.

Santa Monica-based Brighter.com , an online site focused on helping consumers find and compare dentists, has scored $5M in a Series A funding. The new site--the latest from entrepreneur Jake Winebaum --said that the funding was led by Mayfield Fund.

I recently wrote a blog post about why I believe that startup teams in close proximity perform better. I once mentioned this idea to a fellow SoCal VC when I told him I wanted a CIC in LA and he said, “Co-location is dead. In fact, this is the set up Jeff had as he was between gigs. We don’t believe in it anymore.
