Four of Southern California's Cloud Computing Startups

One of the most active areas of interest and growth in the technology industry today is cloud computing--the use of computing resources on the Internet, to accomplish tasks that normally would have taken a server farm or local systems. Among the more successful firms here have in the cloud computing space been Irvine-based 3Tera, which was recently acquired by CA.

Here are a number of Southern California startups who are making waves in the cloud computing, as mined from our subscription venture capital database.


Eucalyptus Systems

Funding: $25.5M, from Benchmark Capital, BV Capital, and New Enterprise Associates

Eucalyptus Systems, based in Goleta, develops cloud computing software to manage private and public cloud deployment. The firm is notable not only for the widespread use of its software, but because it is now headed by former MySQL CEO marten Mickos.


MaestroDev

Funding: Mission Ventures

MaestroDev, in Manhattan Beach, is developing software used to build and develop cloud-based applications and handle cloud deployment and configuration. The firm is the latest startup to come from Winston Damarillo, who has a long track record of successful enterprise software firms.


RightScale

Funding: $42.5M, Benchmark Capital, Index Ventures, Tenaya Capital

RightScale is based in Santa Barbara, and develops cloud computing management software, server templates, and configuration tools.


OTOY

Funding: Private

[Profile]

OTOY, based in Los Angeles, is developing software which moves graphics rendering operations "into the cloud", including video/film special effects, video games, and other products. The firm is looking to allow users to play "games in the cloud".
