Santa Monica-based Userplan has extended the firm's chat applications, saying Tuesday that the firm will connect users of its chat application across different web sites, regardless of where they are on the web. The developer of web widgets said that the cross-platform chat is available on any social networking with an open API.

Michael Jones , CEO of MySpace and former founder of Userplane, has another exit under his belt today, as AOL announced it has acquired Thing Labs , a San Francisco maker of web-based, social software. This is at least the second time Jones has benefited from an AOL acquisition; his own startup, Userplane, was acquired by AOL in 2006.

Van Natta left Los Angeles-based MySpace in February, leaving the operation of the social networking site to Jason Hirschorn and Michael Jones. Jones was the founder and CEO of Userplane until its acquisition by AOL. Since then, Hirschorn also left MySpace, leaving the Jones at the Helm.

Los Angeles-based social networking site MySpace said late Wednesday that CEO Owen Van Natta is stepping down from his position, and will be replaced by co-presidents Mike Jones and Jason Hirschorn. Jones was most recently COO at MySpace, and is best known in the Los Angeles area for founding Userplane , which he sold to AOL in 2006.

Santa Monica-based Tsavo , the online media firm run by former Userplane founder Michael Jones, said Monday that it has officially launched a new web site focused on searching the popular Twitter micro-blogging service. The new service, Twithority , allows users to search for Twitter messages, shown in order of highest ranking users and time.
