Port of Los Angeles Wins $41M For Hydrogen Fuel Cell Project

The Port of Los Angeles reported late Friday that it has received a preliminary award of $41M, from the California Air Resource Board (CARB), for a high tech hydrogen fuel cell freight project. According to the Port of Los Angeles--which has been working over the years to reduce a big issue with air pollution due to the port's extremely high volume of shipment of goods---said the new project will include 10 zero-emissions heavy-duty hydrogen fuel-cell-electric trucks, two new heavy-duty hydrogen fuel stations, and four zero-emissions cargo handling equipment, to help move cargo from Los Angeles ports to other areas in the Los Angeles basin. The Port said the project has a total cost of $82,568,872, with partners providing 50.2%, or $41,446,612 in match funding. The Port of Los Angeles is working with Kenworth and Toyota on the project, which ultimately plans to extend to such locations as Riverside County and the port of Hueneme, and eventually allthe way to Merced. According to the Port, the project will help reduce 465 metric tons of greenhouse gas and 0.72 weighted tons of NOx, ROG and PM10, which are major air pollutants.
