EDF Renewables Installs Battery Storage At San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo is getting its very own, battery energy storage system, which is being installed by San Diego's EDF Renewables, according to the zoo and EDF Renewables on Tuesday. According to the two, they are now operating a 1-megawatt (MW)/4-megawatt hour (MWh) battery storage facility in Balboa Park, which will be used to mitigate spikes in the zoo's energy costs. The two said the system will lower demand charges, and will also minimize energy costs by recharging the battery when energy is at its lowest available rates. The two did not say how much the battery storage project cost to build, but said that the San Diego Zoo was able to avoid all upfront costs by only paying EDF Renewables based on its actual utility bill savings from using the batteries.
