Viasat Backs New UC San Diego Data Science Institute

Carlsbad-based satellite communications company Viasat says it is backing a new institute at the University of California, San Diego, focused on data sciences. According to Viasat--which both operates it own satellite communications networks, as well as the equipment used to connect to those networks--it is a "Founding Industry Partner" for the new UC San Diego Halicioglu Data Science Institute (HDSI). Viasat said it will make a contribution the the HDSI, and also help shape the educational degree programs, and help assist in development of both short-term traiing programs and other efforts. Viasat said UC San Diego's HDSI will help connect various academic disciplines in the school and help faculty engage with data science. Financial details of the effort were not announced. HDSI is led by Rajesh Gupta.
