Microsoft, Disney Link On Cloud, Technology Deal

The Walt Disney Studios, in Burbank, and technology giant Microsoft Corp. are in a new deal where the two will work together, where Disney will work with Microsoft on ways to create, produce and distribute content on the Microsoft Azure cloud platform, the companies announced on Friday morning. According to the companies, they are in a five year "innovation partnership" to develop 'scene-to-screen' content workflows, which will include a technology hub called The Walt Disney Studios StudioLAB. Financial details of the cloud services and technology deal were not announced. Walt Disney Studios said, that by moving many production and postproduction workflows to the cloud, the company hopes to "create content more quickly and efficiently around the world." Disney has traditionally maintained its own computing and storage resources in-house. Microsoft and Disney said that part of the Azure effort is being enabled by video editing tools provider Avid; the companies said they had already been producing several essential media workflows through Avid in the cloud.
