SolarReserve Awarded $2.0M From DOE For Tracking Technology

Santa Monica-based SolarReserve, a developer of large scale solar thermal power plants and related technology, reported on Thursday that it has received $2.0M in an award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), to go towards solar mirror tracking technology. According to SolarReserve, the funding goes towards next-generation heliostat technology, which is used to keep mirrors used in olar power generation aimed at the sun. SolarReserve said the funding came specifically from the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) to advance concentrating solar-thermal power (CSP) research and development. SolarReserve said that heliostats account for up to half of the cost of concentrating solar power systems (CSPs). The company's solar thermal plants--which use the sun to create molten salt, which is then stored to heat used to power steam turbines--can be seen between California and Las Vegas.
