Myspace Confirms Major Password Leak

Los Angeles-based Myspace, which is now part of Time, Inc., confirmed a major security breach on Tuesday, saying that stolen Myspace user login data had been posted to an online hacker forum. Myspace--which blamed the hack on Russian cyberhacker "Peace."--said the data stolen included user login data from a portion of accounts that were created prior to June 11, 2013 on the old Myspace platform. Reports place the number of compromised user accounts at 427 million passwords. Myspace said it had invalidated all user passwords for affected accounts created prior to June 11, 2013. The company said it had conducted a major security upgrade in 2013 as part of its site relaunch. An analysis of the password breach found that, among the top passwords used by users, were "password1", "abc123", and "123456". Myspace now focuses mostly on promoting music and musicians, after multiple changes in ownership.
