FAA Extends More Unmanned Aircraft Exemptions To Hollywood

The FAA said Monday that it has granted eight more regulatory exemptions for commercial use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), nearly all of them to a set of linked companies in Van Nuys which film for Hollywood. According to the FAA, it issued UAS exemptions to Total Safety US inc., Slugwear Inc., as well as Team 5, LLC, Shotover Camera Systems LP, Helinet Aviation Services LLC, and Alan D. Purwin, all for film and television production. Team 5, Shotover, and Helinet are all in the business of film and television production, and are related to pilot Alan D. Purwin, who has a long list of credits filming for Hollywood. Purwin's companies are currently involved in filming for Warcraft, The Hunger Games, Furious 7, and also had been involved in Transformers: Age of Extinction, Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides, and dozens and dozens of other well known films. So far, Hollywood has been the biggest beneficiary of the FAA's willingness to grant limited commercial drone permits in controlled situations.
