Green Dot said the patent relates to its use of geolocation for creating customized user experiences, as well as for risk management and fraud prevention. The patent names Samuel H. Pernikoff as inventors, and was filed by Green Dot way back in July of 2007. Green Dot was represented by Arent Fox LLP in the patent filing.

Patents held by startups generally have a limited ability to reduce competition. The average time required to obtain a patent is 36-to-40 months, during which there is no guarantee your adVenture will ultimately receive patent protection. Even if you are granted a patent, the scope of your claims may be significantly denuded.

For fifteen years, I owned four dry cleaners in Irvine, and sold those in 2007. Where''d the idea for the company come from? The market is changing.

It was started at the University of Southern California in 2006-2007. We''re now scaling it up, and we''ve also filed seven patents in that process. Our current customers and users had a very high desire to make it available, and so we developed the company to deliver the product. You can''t do it in real time.

We've also had great advances in engaging the trust of the commercial community, with patented advances like automatic scoring of our algorithms, which predicts the quality of translations based on a one-through-five scale.

No patents filed. Maybe the solution hasn’t yet been commercialized, but a patent has been submitted by someone else, putting your idea in jeopardy. Another series of searches on Google Patents and the US Patent Office site and Free Patents Online is in order at this point. Real customer need.
