Out of Home Advertising Firms Merge

Santa Monica-based Fuelcast, which operates an advertising network at gas stations, said Thursday that it has merged with Bhootan, which provides out-of-home media at retail stores, to create a new company called Outcast. The new, merged company will be headquartered in Santa Monica.

Siemer & Associates Acquired By Chinese Investment Bank

Santa Monica-based investment banking firm Siemer & Associates , which has focused on the technology and media sector, has been acquired by Chinese investor CEC Capital Group. Siemer & Assocaites was founded by David Siemer in 2008. Financial terms of the acquisition were not announced. CEC said it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire 100% of Siemer & Associates.

MTV Buys Social Project

Santa Monica-based Social Project--which was once known as Tagworld--has been acquired by MTV Networks, MTV said Monday. According to MTV, Social Project and its 31 employees will remain based in Santa Monica.

Activision Appoints Chief Creative Officer

Santa Monica-based Activision Publishing said this morning that it has appointed Brad Jakeman as the firm's Chief Creative Officer. Jakeman joins the video game publisher from Macy's, where he was EVP of Corporate Marketing. Tsavo Launches Search Engine Marketing Arm

Santa Monica-based Tsavo Media, the new startup founded by Userplane founder Michael Jones, has launched a new division, focused on search engine marketing. The firm announced the division Tuesday afternoon, saying that its new Tsavo Agency will provide search engine marketing and content monetization services for companies. The new unit comes shortly after Tsavo Media's acquisition of Better Inc, which runs the DONE! search engine marketing business.

Mahalo Takes On Questions and Answers

Santa Monica-based Mahalo, the high profile startup headed by Jason Calacanis, has launched a new questions and answers site it is calling Mahalo Answers. The new service is similar to offerings from Yahoo with its Yahoo Answers service, Los Angeles-based Sodahead , and Demand Media's Answerbag Q&A service. The new Q&A service is the mysterious "Project A" which Calacanis was drumming up beta testers for earlier this month.

Gorilla Nation Extends Gawker Deal

Santa Monica-based Gorilla Nation, which provides ad sales for web publishers, said today that it has extended its deal with Gawker Media to cover advertising sales throughout the UK. The firm had inked an earlier deal with Gawker to represent the firm in Canada. Financial impact of the deal was not disclosed. Gawker publishes the Gawker, Defamer, Jzzebel, Gizmodo, Kotaku, ValleyWag, Lifehacker, and Jalopnik online gossip and media sites.

Gorilla Nation Gets Xbox Game Win

Santa Monica-based online advertising rep firm Gorilla Nation has scored a win for the promotion of a new Xbox game called Fable 2. According to Gorilla Nation, it is in an international partnership to promote the Fable 2 video game, and has created a custom widget that is being deployed throughout the UK, United States, and Canada. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The win came through media agency Universal McCann Interactive.

Santa Monica-based Activision Publishing, a publisher of video games, announced this morning that it has acquired Budcat Creations, a video game developer based in Iowa City, Iowa. Financial details of the buy were not disclosed. Budcat Creations develops Wii and Nintendo DS titles for the home video game market. Activision said that it has worked with Budcat Creations for the development of multiple games in its Guitar Hero franchise.

Livestrong.com Rolls iPhone App

Santa Monica-based Livestrong.com, the online health site effort of the Lance Armstrong Foundation and Demand Media, said this morning that the site has rolled out a new application for the iPhone and iPod touch. According to Livestrong.com, it has introduced a new Calorie Tracker application which can be used to monitor nutritional intake via their iPhone. The new application is available for free, through the Apple App Store.

Mahalo Cuts Staff

Santa Monica-based Mahalo, the search and news site run by Jason Calacanis, has cut 10 percent of the firm's staff, Calacanis said in a post on his blog Wednesday. Calacanis said that the moves were due to a "challenging economic environment." According to Calacanis, the firm is "fairly certain" that advertising for the next two years will be "severely depressed." The cuts will give the company runway past 2012. Cornerstone OnDemand Adds Social Networking Features

According to Cornerstone, it has introduced a new product called Cornerstone Connect, which will provide workforce collaboration to its customers. The new product provides online communities, user profiles, blogs, and wiki features for business collaboration.
